When to use them:
Always as a learner: If you are driving on a Class 1 (car) or Class 6 (motorcycle) learner licence, displaying L plates is a mandatory requirement.
Remove them after: If an experienced or fully licensed driver takes over the wheel, the L plates must be removed or covered. Leaving them on can result in a fine.
Where and how to display them:
Placement: You must display one L plate on the front and one on the rear of your vehicle. (For motorcycles, only the rear plate is needed).
Visibility: They must be clearly visible to other drivers from up to 20 metres away and must not obstruct your front or rear vision.
Avoid windows: Never stick them on your front or rear windscreens where they block your view of the road.
Specifications: The plates must feature a black ‘L’ on a yellow background and meet standard size requirements.
